It's something I didn't grow up doing probably because I didn't grow up in a "traditional Christian" home, but I am excited to experience this season in a new way, which I guess is an old way...I just haven't gotten into it ever, until now.

I think more than anything I want to do the opposite of what the world influences me to do. From Thanksgiving through Christmas, everything around me feels like hurry up, sugar rush, bright lights, discounts, excessiveness in the midst of emptiness. With Advent (which I like to think of as a baby shower for Jesus ;p) I just want to wait and listen. I don't know what that will be like, cause I talk a lot and get things done along the way...so waiting and being silent is not "me", but here I am entering into a new kind of everyday.tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235390688555788552.post-71577616451356525302011-08-11T10:54:00.000-07:002011-08-11T10:54:54.445-07:00Keep Shining...

One of the most powerful pieces (out of many) was Lamar's piece, "...The Shooter." This clip is not from the documentary, but I was so glad that I still found it online...so good.

Something else I spoke to the reporter about was how interesting it is that we have a basketball player who gets fined $100,000 for using the "F-word" toward a referee during a basketball game...yet the Westboro Baptist Church is protected when they use slurs during military funerals. With their signs that read, "God Hates F---" and their digusting protests during the funerals for the brave, young people who sacrificed their lives for our country, the Supreme Court, "our" Supreme Court does not hold them accountable for their hate...for their words:

I went to see him speak on Wednesday at Pacific Lutheran University with some friends and with my supervisor (yeah, she's a great boss).

So, Tim shared a lot of powerful information, history, truths and personal stories.

One out of many stories he shared that I appreciated most was this one...

Here, Tim Wise talks about addressing race with his young daughters as they watch "Evan Almighty," where God is played by actor, Morgan Freeman.

He talks about the impact of racialized images in our society, specifically, the common racialized images of God and what that communicates.
I was so excited, and I wanted nothing more than to see her...but tickets were expensive...so I passed.

Fast forward to Dec 2010 - Maya Angelou is coming back to Seattle...this time it wasn't about whether I wanted to go...I had to go. And how crazy was it that when I called the box office, a few days after tickets went on sale, there were still front row seats available.

I had it in my mind, that some guy from Boeing, Microsoft, or some fancy schmancy Book Club would have acquired the entire front section by this point, just because it was Maya...but the seats were still open and available...so after freaking out, asking the guy on the phone how long he could hold the seats, emailing friends, facebooking friends, calling friends, running around my office to see "who's coming with me?" and freaking out again...8 friends and I were able to get a group rate for the best seats at The Paramount to see Dr. Maya Angelou.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I had to be there. It was even better to know that I could share this moment with so many good people in my life who loved Maya too.

My first exposure to Maya Angelou was when I was about 13 years old through 'Poetic Justice'... I had never heard someone describe a black woman so creatively with so much beauty, elegance, and strength. As I heard Janet Jackson quote Maya's 'Phenomenal Woman' piece, I thought, I need to get to know who this writer is. This is so different than anything I've ever heard.

After that, I began to write and read poetry, and learn about other writers on my own because they were never mentioned in school. Poets and writers like Nikki Giovanni, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes and Rita Dove...

Maya's words, her influence, her brilliance opened up a new world for me, it was very magical for me at that age.

---

So here I am, March 14th 2011, 30 years old...going to see Maya Angelou in Seattle...craziness :D!

Her presence made the city warmer, more colorful...And yes, I definitely noticed an increase of people who looked like me walking around downtown Seattle...the crowd was diverse and different, and I loved it.

After meeting with friends, happy hour, taking photos, passing out tickets, watching an usher's funny facial expression when she found out we had front row tickets, running to the bathroom and two great opening acts...
I am at my seat, and Maya is introduced...

...the curtain raises, and there she is smiling in red. I am caught between a scream and a cry..."I LOVE YOU MAYA!" and then some silence...some shock, I sit down and start crying...this is so corny...but I did...it was really like a dream to be there and to finally see her.

She began singing, "i shall not, i shall not be moved, just like the tree that's planted by the water, i shall not be moved..."

One of the first pieces she shared:

She does not know her beauty, she thinks her brown body has no glory. If she could dance naked under palm trees and see her image in the water, she would know. But there are no palm trees on the street, and dishwater gives back no images.

--
Throughout the evening she moved in and out of sharing her poetry, the work of others who inspired her, stories about history, faith, family, community, travelling...and all of this while making us laugh, reflect, and stay captivated.

She is 82 years old and lovely...I was so amazed by how she was able to memorize so much work and so much knowledge:

Terence Afer (A freed slave who became a playwright in Rome)
- she quoted him, "Nothing that is human can be alien to me."
and how powerful it was for him at that time in history to proclaim, "I am a human being."

Invictus
- she told a story about how the words of this poem got her son through a painful surgery: "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." How these great works belong to all of us. This was one of the 1st poems she taught her son...

And she was so playful, and wise...
She joked about how she is trying to be a Christian and is really working at it. How amazed she is whenever, someone sticks out their hands and says "I'm a Christian." and she thinks, "Already?" It's like trying to be a good friend, trying to be a parent, or trying to be a lover. You work at it. It's not something you achieve and then sit back and say, "I got it now, I'm cool."

---

There's so much more I wish I could express, it was an incredible experience...

I am beaming and inspired.

That's all, for now.

After students learn about white privilege, sometimes they feel discouraged, and ultimately wonder how they should respond to the reality of racial issues and privilege.

This is why I am thankful for people like Louis C.K.
Whatever gifts you have, use it to discuss (not ignore) these issues, educate yourself and others, change your world, pursue justice...and if you're funny...if you keep it real, you'll always get the respect of the band.tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235390688555788552.post-1142980720738993802011-02-27T21:36:00.000-08:002011-03-22T14:24:59.280-07:00For J. BerryTonight, after briefly watching the Oscars and noticing the irony of Lena Horne's tribute...I was encouraged by a friend, "J.Berry" to update my blog.

Lena Horne was beautiful, talented and a trailblazer for people of color in Hollywood - In a time of "ridiculously evil" segregation and oppression, she was the first African-American actress to have a major studio contract. This was almost 70 years ago...

During tonight's Oscars she was paid tribute by Halle Berry, who was the 1st African American actress to finally win "Best Actress" 10 years ago in 2001...

"She opened doors so we could have our place in the sun..." said Halle Berry.

Yet, there was no place, no sight of any actor, writer, producer, director of any race other than white, who was nominated.

A New York Magazine writer noted, "While speaking about Horne's career, Halle said, "that was a very different time in Hollywood." ...Well, Not different enough."

The lack of diversity at the Oscars isn't just a coincidence, or another complaint that people in the majority wish others wouldn't notice or talk about...it's a symptom of something bigger...something that we all wish would have been over by now.

The irony of the tribute was followed by a "We are the World/Disney" style finale by a diverse kids chorus from New York City. They sang "Over the Rainbow."

The lyrics, "why, oh why can't I?" echoed in my head, as I am hopeful that Hollywood will reflect more stories, more diversity, more acceptance.

This is a gift that many people take for granted when they always get to see people who look like them reflected constantly and consistently (on television, movies, magazines, etc.)

The effect communicates something...are we visible? are we valued? are we wanted?

We shouldn't have to wait another 10 years for a sign of acceptance and equality in Hollywood...and when I think of actors from more ethnicities who are underrepresented (Asian American, Native American, Latino...)
I cringe...and then I hope even more.
When 46 years ago, African Americans couldn't vote, when people were beat, put in jail, humiliated and even murdered, today to watch Barack Obama be sworn in as our new president meant so much more than I can express...

Let's see...so, here's how I spent my day:

Inaugural Viewing at work....Freshest Old School Line of the Inauguration:

"Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen." - Rev. Joseph E. Lowery

"Ha!" - Me

MLK Memorial Celebration featuring my beautiful friend Sandra and my bfb (niece) "KaeKae" Kalea! I worked 2-3 weeks on the 2 photo montages they showed at the event! It was crazy emotional to research images from slavery, Civil War, Jim Crow, Little Rock 9, the Civil Rights Movement to Celebrations in Black history, Hurricane Katrina and ending with Obama...it was a very deep visual journey, but everything turned out perfect in the end! Everyone worked so hard to put the event together. There were 2 Gospel Choirs, an "out of this world' Gospel singer - Joy Jones(yes! her voice made me and Sandra cry - in a good way) a Brass Ensemble, student readers, candlelight march...it was a beautiful night!!

January began in such an amazing way! What began as an idea I had during a staff retreat turned into a successful, creative, and inspiring community event! "The Good Foot Arts Collective Cafe Tour" was something that both me and my big brother Milton worked on together to connect with the community and other artists. It was the first time the Good Foot had showcased the Visual Arts side of our mission. We had our opening reception at All City Coffee in Pioneer Square, and worked with 8 other artists to complete the show. That night was such a surprise! So many people showed up! At one point there was a line going outside the door. We had great music playing all night (courtesy of DJ Ohmega Watts :D)...and people just felt comfortable enough to stay, relax and get to know people...which is pretty rare for this location's art openings. The owners of the cafe were surprised that the place was so packed, and it turned out better than I could have hoped. Milton said he saw it as "God giving us a vision" on how great this could be. Yeah :)! The Cafe Tour Jan 09 to April 09, this was just the first show...yayerrr! Still so happy....tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235390688555788552.post-82814634946489163582009-01-20T21:20:00.000-08:002009-02-09T17:55:20.902-08:00Home...This is my crazy update since I haven't been on my blog since Nov 2008, :p!
Here we go...
December 15th, I flew to Tampa to spend Christmas with my family! I had so much fun, and it was really hard to leave. Our holiday consisted of: Eating, Dancing, Watching Movies (Tia's Film Series), Cleaning up together, Eating some more, Watching TV, Dancing some more, Hugging, and Exercising together...In short, I love my family, and I am very very blessed! Here is a pic of all of us, before we went exercising... :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WRn5zv18RNc/SXa9HhaVClI/AAAAAAAAARY/No5JkcXULrI/s320/IMG_0194.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293626348946131538" />tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235390688555788552.post-71789090582613078642008-11-18T22:04:00.001-08:002008-11-18T22:43:06.185-08:00Opus OMG!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 180px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WRn5zv18RNc/SSOzrKMIySI/AAAAAAAAAOo/Fh90Ipe2xuc/s200/Barankitse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270253543004621090" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 180px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WRn5zv18RNc/SSOzq-didOI/AAAAAAAAAOg/e-CnnnaCNn8/s200/Woodard.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270253539856381154" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 180px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WRn5zv18RNc/SSOzq_xSIbI/AAAAAAAAAOY/t6h6hCBCkFs/s200/Krishnammal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270253540207632818" />

Tonight I attended one of the most inspirational events! The Opus Prize Ceremony. This is an award that is given every year, but this year my grad school, Seattle U, was the host for it at Benaroya Hall. This award honors faith-based humanitarian leaders from around the world.
The 3 recipients (please look up, because they are extraordinary and real life Heroes!!) were: Krishnamal Jagannathan for Land for Tillers' Freedom from India, Michael Woodard for Jubilee House Community from Nicaragua and Marguerite Barankitse for Maison Shalom from Burundi. Their stories were so powerful. They saw tragedy, injustice, and the needs of many and were moved to action. They each described it as their "calling" or "God's calling for their life" and their "life's purpose". These people were so selfless and passionate, but amazingly they were just normal people who made a decision.
A student who spoke that night described Michael Woodard as someone who had "an impatience for injustice".
Krishnamal (she is so small and adorable) said how we are "all different physically, but on the inside we are the same."
Marguerite "Maggie" who spoke last and received the million dollar prize said,"...our human vocation is to love" after witnessing the murder of 72 people in her village, she is so hopeful and continues to work and restore the lives of so many people, she also said, "I know that evil will never take the last word. Never, never."
Ugh!!! I am still so moved and inspired. This night really made an impact on my heart and how I perceive what I am capable of. There is so much to do...tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235390688555788552.post-66787326843692246282008-10-14T23:43:00.000-07:002011-03-01T00:42:40.613-08:00God's fanclub<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_WRn5zv18RNc/SPWVnOP9b3I/AAAAAAAAANc/sA4TawUM5NE/s200/_42433008_fans_ap_gall.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257272641097396082" />
So I was driving home from class today, a riveting Multicultural Perspective class at SU (woop woop!), anyway, as usual after a long day of work, I am blastin Santogold, Prince, or Slightly Stoopid in my Mitsubishi (another woop!). I see a few cars in front of me with bumper stickers...there's "Obama 08", "Obama & Biden", "I can't afford to vote Republican"...etc.

Then I see this car with a sticker that says, "I don't have anything against God, it's His fanclub I can't stand" Huh.

It took me a hot minute to think about, but, I really loved that sticker. I was also really sad that there was so much truth in it. Throughout my day to day...as a student, in class, in this city, at work...I can see that so many people long for God, seek Him in different ways...and oddly how it's Christianity and Christians that can many times be this kryptonite, or bad taste, that turns people off and away from God.

Sometimes it turns me off.

Is God like "WTF?" when He sees the ignorance, exclusion, and unfriendliness that I have seen in some Christian lives. All these thoughts from this sticker...I want to be someone who is transparent, loving, and redeem whatever truth has been lost by this "fanclub".

Yep, I have to agree with Grace on that! This past Tuesday I went to my first Mariners game with Gracie. It was crazy! We had amazing seats right behind the dugout of the other team...Da Angels. Anyway we were close...it was cold and balls were flying everywhere! The players would swing and I was so scared that a ball would hit me upside the head. Baseball fans are so brave! Balls were richocheting off poles from level to level and landing at god knows how many miles an hour down into the crowd. Foul balls hurling into crowds of children and a mix of old dudes and frat boys with baseball mits. Everytime someone caught or fought for a ball, they did a little dance after...but anytime a ball flew by me and Grace I freaked. Despite all that, I can't wait to go to my next ball game, I will be prepared either with a baseball glove or an umbrella if I am too scared to go for a ball, we'll see.tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5235390688555788552.post-34408522543739900092008-09-23T18:26:00.000-07:002008-09-23T18:30:07.986-07:00Grizzie Grizzie Grad School!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WRn5zv18RNc/SNmX8btigbI/AAAAAAAAAL8/KpuOzfyEhUQ/s320/Seattle+University.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249393905163731378" />
I am so excited I start Graduate School this week at SU! My friends and family are so amazing, I got the best morning phone calls from my mom, grandpa, dad and Barry! Hmm, what else, I also now own the movie, 'Bella', thanks to Nicholei, who gave me my present early! I kinda freaked out when I opened it, that movie is beautiful! There's more good stuff that I don't have time to write about, but in short, it's been allll love! 28 feels sooo good, like I massage or a good stretch. It's not as much drama as some people think...I feel nice and "even", just like my age! :p.tia*http://www.blogger.com/profile/17207409393306569186noreply@blogger.com2
